Football players are tough and it has become almost a written rule that your not going to show weakness or too much emotion. That would make you less of a man so they say. That plays out year after year and on and off the field I see the boys struggle with so many things. From social pressures, grades, drugs and alcohol, violence, and physical pain this game is not for the weak. For 12 years now I have written about top athletes and guys in this life and on the grind to make it. To me, having lived it, I know you boys and what you are about.
I also know many of you are from single parent households and in most cases that means you're with your Mom. Even those of you lucky enough to have both parents, which makes you in the minority, I know your Mother plays big in all you do. One way or the other you have someone at home or in your life who plays that role of Mom. Blood in this case is of little relevance.
Who is she? Have you thought about what she has done and how she has provided for and helped you on your way? Well of course you have but have you shown her or done anything to acknowledge her? Maybe she screams too much at the games or dotes on you and you are just too tired to do much but mutter a thank you. That is what I remember. And I was always tired and hungry and thought this was her job to handle things.
But guys look. This time in your life is just as big and special for your parents as it is for you. After all they brought you up and showed you the way and cared for you at some level to get you somewhere and to get you a shot. At least I hope they did.
For you guys I wish a safe season filled with memories and joys. Through the ups and downs I hope you can fill that tank of memories that will fuel you through your lives and I hope to that you can do one thing for your Mom.
Slow down and acknowledge her face to face when you can and thank her from your heart- hug her and let her know how much she means. It will fill her tank for a lifetime and it's all she needs to keep her going.
Guys I am also going to ask you before we jump into these Friday Nights to watch this Film- it's short- and consider all that this brilliant yet tortured man has to say to you. He is someone I admire and if you watch this and like it I want you to share this story and Tweet or Share with #ForMom.
Leave your Mom's Name in the Tweet and Add her name to the bottom of this story on on your FB Wall. This will help to assure she never has to have a day not knowing if she did enough.
That's all I had to say!
