Big Camp Set For UW Saturday As New Group Takes Over

One of the biggest camps of the year is tomorrow at the UW and it was one that Barton Football and NEI had planned out. Big Camp Set For UW Saturday As New Group Takes Over

One of the biggest camps of the year is tomorrow at the UW and it was one that Barton Football and NEI had planned out.  In the beginning of the Year they posted stories that they were holding a major event June 29th and 30th.  Originally to get to the Camp athletes were told that they needed to attend at least one of the groups Regional Combine events.  Those events came and went and now the Camp which is planned for June 30th is Open to anyone that wants to come.  That was a good move probably.

The camp will be a big one as several colleges appear to be coming out and that has been a point we have pounded into everyone.  If there are college coaches there try and  get there if you can.

That is exposure that no Combine or other camp can get you.

The camp is $110 dollars and to be sure will be loaded with a lot of star power kids as well as a lot of hopefuls.  So camp was all set to go.

But there was an Emergency Message sent out last night by the Barton Football group that announced that the camp as designed was being called off and that registered Campers could get a Refund or choose to come to the camp that will be run by the new group Rough Diamonds Athletic  Foundation.

Here is the Emergency Notice that Barton sent out:

"Along with Barton Football, I also run the website NEI.  Though it is a free website, the NCAA deems it a "Recruiting Service" and places it in the same category as Scout.com and Rivals.com.  NCAA rules state that no "Recruiting Service" can run an event with D1 coaches in attendance.  We were notified of this fact this week, and informed we would not be able to run this showcase event.  So we were faced with 2 choices: Cancel the event, or have another group run it instead.  As it would have been a shame for this event not to take place, both for the kids and the schools that will be there, we chose the latter.

So in a nutshell, here's what that means.  Instead of being called the "Barton Football Showcase", the event is now being called the "Northwest Stars Camp".  Instead of Barton Football running the event, RDAF(Rough Diamonds Athletic Foundation) will be running it. " Taylor Barton

Barton also owns and runs the Fee Based recruiting service known as Blue Collar Recruits and represents several kids to colleges in an role which no doubt may have created issues as well.   As a Rivals.com partner it has been clear to us for many years that we were treated this same way which has made no sense.  Even though we do not have a business like Blue Collar the NCAA has rules that are very hard to understand and often very unfair to any of us that are writers running websites.  Barton/NEI unfortunately got the notice on this very late.

Kids should get to a camp like this so it is great that Barton was able to find a way to keep the camp alive and on schedule.

Campers are all being refunded according to the email in the next couple of days.  Campers are encouraged to come and assured that the Collegiate schools adveritsed  will still be in attendance.

Campers coming to the Camp need to print out the Medical Release Form which is Here.

Campers will be able to Pay for the Camp at the camp and the schedule is located on the Website for Rough Diamonds Here.

Now we had to ask the question about who is Rough Diamonds?  Well it turns out it is well known Track Coach and Barton & NEI Team North Colan Sewell who we have had a long relationship with.  Here is a story we featured this year about Sewell that was a very good read about his commitment to the kids.

This is a good man to have take over such a big camp.

Now the camp could generate in the range of $40,000 to $60,000 dollars in one day gross.  So what will Sewell be doing with all that money and what is Rough Diamonds Athletic Foundation?

We went straight to the source on that one.

"In terms of the foundation, this is just the beginning.  The organization has been in incubation mode and we weren’t quite ready to put our name out there yet, but we felt this opportunity was one we could not pass up," he said by email today as we sought out a quote. "All the proceeds are going towards the mission of the foundation which is to provide underprivileged youth the tools and resources to pursue a college athletic scholarship."  Colan Sewell

This is what we have advocated from all camps and clinics especially those that use the public fields and multi-million dollar complexes.  The Net proceeds, at least the large majority of them, should come back to the kids and to helping them make it to college and to offset the costs.  The fact Sewell is committing these funds is commendable.

So Colan is on his game with Rough Diamonds Athletic Foundation.

With the Coaches coming and Barton and his staff in the mix this event promises to be a win – win for everyone.

Hope to see you all at Camp.
