Brett Rypien Named Top Underclassmen At National Camp

The Rivals.com Performance Camp sponsored by Under Armour was just held in Chandler, Arizona and was considered by industry insiders as perhaps the best camp of this kind.  No Combine.  Just Football.  And lots of it.

To be invited to this Camp the criteria was that you needed a Division 1 FBS offer in hand or had to be specially selected to attend.  The emphasis was on having a hard look at the best of the best athletes in a camp environment to see how they would respond.   The first of 15 such Camps Nationwide, the Arizona Camp, was a great start to such an ambitious effort and you know the boys of the NW were all about making their names known.

Brett Rypien of Shadle Park High School was named a Top 10 Underclassmen at the Rivals Camp in Phoenix this month.

Brett Rypien of Shadle Park High School was named a Top 10 Underclassmen at the Rivals Camp in Phoenix this month.

We have covered several of the guys who stood out at the camp in the desert and the next day in Los Angeles.   One guy we had yet to get to is 2015 super recruit QB Brett Rypien out of Spokane, Washington.  The Shadle Park Sophomore already has an offer from WSU and his name is already all over the West.

But being on a big stage like this Rivals Camp was something that would test the 6’2″- 175 lb gunslinger in a way he had never been tested before.  His  3, 574 yards and 28 TD’s made a lot of noise Regionally in 2012.  His single game record of 577 yards last season even made National News.

But the question going in, famous last name and all, was could Brett Rypien impress the Nations best and oft most stingy analysts?

The answer was an emphatic “Yes”.

Going from various drops and out of “the gun” Rypien made throw after throw to Receivers and Backs from around the Nation.  Granted these guys were the best targets he has ever thrown too.  But they were also being defended by many of the Nation’s best defensive players.  It was a solid enough performance that Adam Gorney the Western Region Analyst for Rivals.com said:

“the 2015 quarterback has the moxie, mental game and physical tools to be a special quarterback. He needs to fill out his frame because he’s really lean, but that should come with time and development. That’s not a concern. Rypien has a lot of zip on his passes, he spins it well and makes a lot of right decisions. He needs to get bigger, but that’s the only issue.”

Rypien agreed saying, “I need to get bigger but that is happening.  I am training for that and it is coming along.”

He has added about 10 lbs since last football season ended and the 3 sport stud could easily add 10 pounds a year putting  him at the 200-210 lbs mark as he begins college.

“That was the best camp event I have ever been too.  It was a really tough group of guys and many of the Nation’s best players were there.  I went in hoping to show I was in that group and I feel like I did that,” said Brett saying he does not feel he did any one thing better then anyone but that he was consistent on all of his efforts.

The great thing for Brett was the number of reps.

“We must have had 2 hours of 1-1’s and that was great.  We were really worked hard and the coaches and players were all amazing.  That is a really good event.”

He feels great about the results as going in he felt ready but he was not sure.  Knowing he stood out and made the list of the top 10 Impact underclassmen was rewarding.

Just coming off basketball Rypien is already hard at work playing baseball where he is a stand out Catcher and Hitter for Shadle Park.

“We won our fist game 8-4 and it is great to get out there.  Baseball was my sport of choice and it is only the last couple years football has sort of evened up.  I love them both a lot,”  he added saying that UW and WSU have both sent letters of recruitment for baseball in the past.

Football seems to be where he will end up but he would not pick one sport over the other.  At least not right now.

One thing that this has been solidified is that Brett Rypien is going to be a Top QB recruit nationally.  His first offer from WSU will not be his last and no doubt the young man is headed for a big future.  A very solid endorsement for the Rivals Camp as well.
