Cameron Saffle Lands First Offer As Bigger Fish Move In

At 6’4″ and 240 lbs Cameron Saffle is an impressive looking kid.   Slated to play Outside Linebacker once again for the Skyline Spartans the rangy powerhouse from Sammamish, Washington is hard at work already with his mind on having a break out year.  His 2013 campaign had him playing both ways for the Spartans and rarely taking a down off.  But that did not stop Cam from returning in 2013 after having a season ending injury as a Sophomore.  He made up for lost time in a big way.

Cameron Saffle was all over the field last season and this year is going to define him as one of the best of the best!

Cameron Saffle (#52) was all over the field last season and this year is going to define him as one of the best of the best!

We saw him at the opener against Bellevue.  With Max Browne already in Los Angeles the new Spartan squad of 2013 struggled a bit out of the gate; especially against a juggernaut like Bellevue.  But Saffle had an impressive game and as we watched the big agile kid had stop after stop.  He pressured the Bellevue backfield often and did a great job of blocking on offense for his squad that struggled to get going that week.  Cameron showed great power and ability to win his battles and was often brought up in run support where he did a nice job making the Wolverines weapons head inside for running lanes.

He landed his first offer in the past few weeks from the Idaho Vandals.  While that established his D-1 ability it does not mean that is where he will punch his ticket.  More then likely the Pac 12 will be reeling this kid in.  We checked in with him to see where the interest was coming from.

“ASU, Arizona, Colorado, USC, Boise State and others are pretty actively recruiting me right now,” said Cameron.  “Others in the mix are UW, Oregon State, UCLA, Stanford, and WSU.”

His Coach Mat Taylor and he have been planning where he can attend camps and have the most impact while still balancing a busy schedule of being a high school kid and his own obligations to the Spartans.

“Coach and I think a stop at Oregon State is a good fit.  maybe Oregon too.  I know I will be doing a padded camp at the UW and I believe Boise State is going to work out as well.  After that it is off the the NIKE Football Training Camp on June 8th in Eugene.  That is a good set of camps and events to get me out there.”

Believe it or not last season was his first year at Linebacker.  And he is ready for year two!

“That was a great experience; call it a learning year.  This year I feel so much more ready and will be looking to set some season records for sacks and tackles too.  Those are some goals for me,” he added.

Among his thoughts about his skill set Saffle says his fast get off and ability to finish plays define him.  His overall positional skills in pass coverage as well as aggressively closing out the play are things he feels he will bring at a much higher level this season!  Yikes!  He is already an elite performer so this is going to mean he is moving up the ranks even more.

He is a big kid so we will not be surprised at all if a guy like Mark Banker at OSU would use him as a DE too.  He can easily be 260 lbs once in college.  For now the offensive line and OLB seem perfect.

What about the Spartans?  They had a bit of an off year last season at 9-2.  Will the team be back?

“Oh yes for sure.  The chemistry seems better this season.  A lot of guys have been here last year and the season before too so I think the experience level will be better for one.  There are some legit leaders who have already established what we are going to do so we all feel just great!”

Cameron identified Blake Gregory as a potential QB option and says he is showing some real promise.  The Spartans are so deep and so well coached that it does not even need to be said.  They are and will be a Top 10 team when the season gets going.
