As OregonPreps.com works on our All State Football Awards we have been reviewing which athletes made the difference and stood above it all.

One athlete will be named as the Overall Player of the Year and we will name a first and second team as well as an outstanding offensive and defensive player.

Steven Long is our 6A Overall Player of the Year which we announced on Monday. Today we announce the 5A Overall Player of the Year.

Mountain View of Bend was a team many knew would be good but at the preseason mark most experts had already handed the OSAA 5A Trophy to Sherwood or Marist. It was a foregone conclusion or so it seemed.

Then the season came and the Cougars got out to a 2-0 start in a big way before being mowed down 41-18 at the hands of the Bowmen of Sherwood as expected. But they never ever stopped believing.

The team improved together working on the little things and always believing in each other.

Leading the way was their 6’3″ – 200 pound QB Jacob Hollister who did a masterful job of being efficient and running the Cougars offense too. The last guy to ever take credit for any of the teams success Jacob is everything you could want in a leader.

The playoffs came and the Cougars were 8-1. They took off beating an always tough Jefferson squad 54-0 in Round 1, then a top rated Lebanon squad 42-21 in Round 2.

Then faced Marist in the Semi-Final where many people felt their season would end.

“We never stopped believing or playing together as a team,” said Hollister after the 31-14 win they put together over the Spartans. Jacob played well but the Cougars line and running game won the day as well as their defense.

That set up the 5A Championship in a rematch game with the Bowmen. Again the experts had Sherwood by 2 scores or better. But this time it would be Hollister and the Cougars turn.

Jacob had a very efficient night throwing for almost 200 yards, no picks, and hooking up with his brother Cody 12 times for 146 yards as well.

In the end the Cougars defense was too much for the Bowmen and the team rolled for over 500 yards of total offense.

A late score by Josh Smith gave the Cougars the 14-13 lead and the win. Hollister and crew did it. When the bell rang they were 5A Oregon State Champs!

“No one thought we could do it but us. No one believed but we did,” Hollister offered. “We always believed and we never ever stopped.”

At seasons end Jacob Hollister had 1,860 yards passing, 32 TD’s and 3 Picks this season. His QB rating was 135 and he completed 65% of his passes. Awesome stats.

But even more importantly Jacob exudes that confidence and leadership that instills that believe theme in all who are around him.

With it all things are possible.

Jacob is a terrific student and has offers from Penn and Princeton and is on his way to really big things.

For being such a standout student athlete and for believing and helping his team live the dream of a State Title we select Jacob Hollister as the Oregon Overall 5A Player of the Year for the 2011 season.
