Jordan Morgan Leads 2014 Oregon Class

One question that comes to mind more and more every year is why? Why is the talent pool of premier players moving down into the younger grade levels. It seems that every year more of the best talent moves down a grade level. This young man is one example of what is becoming more and more common and boy can he play.

If you do not know his name you will. He is Jordan Morgan of Southridge. He is 6’2.5″, and 182 pounds right now and in a couple of weeks he will be a 10th grader.

Despite his age the football field is his domain. He is ready to compete with the best upperclassmen in the State and has proven that all during the Spring and Summer putting his stamp on a number of showcases and events.

The rangy and powerful youngster has a combination of size and skill that you would be hard pressed to find in the best of a graduating class.

At the 5 Star Camp at Aloha recently he owned the day and took home the Combine King award. That was no easy task but he did it.

His 40 times included two 4.60 efforts which were a little off his best but developing. Those times will come down as he develops with 3 full years of High School yet to go.

Jordan’s vertical leap is at 32″ which is also amongst the best for any age group. This asset is something that is apparent when he is on the field as he elevates gracefully from the pack often taking balls he should not other wise get.

On the broad jump he was 1 inch off off of a 10 foot effort and he threw the 3 KG Power Ball 119″. The kid is a terrific athlete.

Now that glowing appraisal is enough to tell of another youngster who has put in the time in SAQ and Skill camps to become the best he can be. But there is something more to this guy.

He is driven. Winning on the field is a priority and he knows what he needs to do make it happen. There is a spark inside him that the good ones seek and the great ones have.

Once you get to know him a little the boyish side comes out with a smile. Looking at where he is now and comparing that to other greats we have had over the years make for a realistic comparison for the future.

If you could travel back 4 seasons and sit in the stands at Hare Field in Hillsboro you would have seen a young talented kid trying to make his mark and succeeding as a 10th grader. That kid while a little bigger was sporting many of these sort of measurables.

His name was and still is Colt Lyerla.

The 2011 season will be a year to rebound for the Southridge Skyhawks and it will be a year where we find out if Jordan Morgan will step into the Friday Night Lights and live up to the reputation he has worked so very hard to earn.

Hard to see how he won’t.
