Josh Smith Makes Immediate Impact At Cascade And Shows Major Talents

Folks if you read my writing you know by now I love a good story, and great players make good stories.  Josh Smith of Chiefland, Florida moved to Everett, Washington this past Summer and enrolled at Cascade High School.  The 6’3″- 208 lb pure athlete had played all over the field in Florida and had done well enough to gain an offer from South Alabama who he has  verbally committed to play for . Catch our story From August about Josh!

Now here in Washington and playing every Friday Night we wanted to see where Smith was at and how he was doing with his transition.

In a word Smith has been nothing short of spectacular.

Through 4 games he has stepped up and played the QB spot for the Bruins; a position he has never played before.  How is he handling it?

The team is 4-0 and the young man is showcasing that he is the best athlete on the field.  He called last night excited that he had followed our call for all Seniors to get us 4 Game Highlight Film and was stoked it turned out so good.  That will happen when your a human highlight like Josh is.

WATCH THIS FILM- IT IS TRULY SPECTACULAR

According to our friends at HeraldNet.com Prep Sports Stats Josh Smith is:

  • 37-59 Passing for 647 yards and 8 TD’s- Averaging 11 yards per reception
  • 36 carries for 330 yards and 8 Td’s- that’s 9 yards per carry

This effort he is making is perhaps the most noteworthy effort we have seen one kid contribute to his team in a year where there have been so many big stories.

Smith can look to support from a host of receivers and is handing off to Dejuan Coleman who we covered yesterday.  And he was quick to credit the line led by Randin Crecelius who has a PSU offer and is one of the best big men around.

“The line is doing a nice job.  They give me time and room to run and when I see a seam I am going.  Randin is terrific and he is a good leader too,” said Smith who sat and answered questions with intelligent responses and laughter as we went over the play by play of his magical start.

He is solidly committed to South Alabama but admits that other interest will be welcome as he focuses on the team and helping his new brothers who he says have a special bond.

“It’s pretty great this bond we all have.  We did a bonding event and all learned to trust each other to protect each other.  Everyone of us is going to sell out everything we have to go to bat for our brothers; to help them and protect them.  That is something you don’t see everywhere,” he said mentioning this group of guys have made him feel loved, like family, and trusted him to lead. “I want the pressure and to be able to perform my best and help the team win.  If I am open to throw I am throwing.  If I see daylight I am running.  Coach wants us to play relaxed and intense and that’s what we are doing to far.”

4-0 Edmonds-Woodway is up next led by Juniour Opoku-Mensah; a dynamic play maker and the Leagues best rusher.  If I was a College Coach or recruiter I would get to this game no doubt.  The talent is there to see and with top guys like these on the field it promises to be a real slug-fest.

“They are a physical team.  We know that and when you play a physical team you have to man up and hand them back everything they hand you and then some.  They are power and speed and all of that.  But so are we and I know we are bringing it too.”

Game on guys!

We had to ask about the difference between Florida and Washington Prep Football?  Is there any and if so what?

“In Florida guys are way over the top aggressive.  Much  more so then here.  The football here is a great hard nosed team style of football which I like better; down there they play for keeps,” said Smith in so many words indicating that this is better in terms of team play and strategy and the finer points of the game.

Cascade had a couple of 0-10 seasons not too long ago and began to improve last season at 5-5.  To be 4-0 is making for a special year and the coaches and kids are all hopeful it continues.  Smith believes it will because of the closeness of the team and the purpose they are playing with.

What about playing QB?  Was it hard for him to play the position?

“At first yest.  The game moves fast and I was struggling a little as the game is really fast out there.  Then I focused on staying calm and playing my game.  That helped and after a while I adjusted to it.  This is a position I feel I can play at the next level.  But I have always been used all over the field and I know Colleges might want me on defense, special teams, or split out and I am fine with all of that.  I will play from the Top to the Bottom of the Roster. It does not matter to me at all.  I am just excited to be here and to have the chance to move on in the future.”

What is his philosophy moving ahead?

Smith thought and then added,”I first of all am not here to impress anyone.  All I care about is getting the “W’s” and it does not matter to me if that means I have big stats or no stats.  I learned a long time ago if I focus on the win and doing what I need to do to get that the rest of the stuff comes along fine.”

Josh Smith has D-1 Size, Speed, Skill, and mind set.  He is a winner and he is someone we believe many D-1 schools in the West will be offering.  The body of work he has put up so far friends is as good if not better then anyone else in the Region; including many NW guys heading on to Top Rated schools all over the Nation.

This guy is for real folks and the big schools are going to see this and move on him unless we are way off.  And that has not happened much if at all in the recent past.  But only time will tell.  The Bruins are very good with this guy and a talented bunch indeed.  Best wishes to both teams for a safe and productive week ahead.

Thanks to Josh Smith as well for the great interview.  He is beyond his years to talk to and sports obvious intelligence to boot!
