This has been a busy off season already and we are enjoying getting to see so many athletes compete at a wide variety of camps and events. One guy who has a huge spirit and essence for life is South Medford’s Makai Manuwai. The Polynesian blooded linebacker – full back- defensive tackle- has the size and the ability to play at any level. His power in the heat of play is awesome and yet his composure the minute the play is over is palpable as he greets all with a smile and a high five. We know this kid and what he is about.
The Wave. That swell of energy and beauty and crashing awesomeness is right where this guy plays on and off the field. Maybe it is in his blood or maybe it’s merely something I’m reading into the times I have seen him play. Either way Makai has what it takes to make it in football and in life. Anyone that can smile like this and have humility and respect while they are dominating play after play is made of the stuff a Champion is made of.
He has it.
We caught up to Makai in June and he reported that mighty Columbia U had offered him a scholarship to attend college and play football for them. His play on the field helped land that offer but not as much as his 4.0 GPA. What a package this young man brings to the table- truly awesome. That offer is a life changing one as going to Columbia can set a student up for life. He may land many more offers as his talent is top tier. Either way what Makai has done is work harder in school on his grades then on football and that will reap the most benefit for him long after the game is over.
Here is Makai Manuwai at the Rose City Rumble event speaking to Dirk Knudsen.
