Mason Johnson Of Kentlake Makes The Most Of 2012 – Here Comes The Boom

Big men are everywhere in High School Ball.  But finding a good big man that can move and finish is the trick.  And over at Kentlake we find one such athlete.    His name is Mason Johnson.

Mason is one of the top 4 or 5 linemen in the Pacific Northwest for the Class of 2014.  One does not have to look any farther then his mid season film which he released to see that.  We have inserted that below for your review.

At 6'3" and 300 Pounds he has the prototypical frame for a big time Center or Defensive Tackle.  The way he man handles opposing linemen we see his size as at work.  But there is a lot more going on there then size.  His balance and strength are extraordinary.

That he gets from his years as a wrestler.

"I have been wrestling since 7th grade.  Last year I made it to Regionals so I did really well," said Mason.

How has that helped him on the football field?

"It is a real grind being a wrestler.  It is a lot different as it is an individual sport and not a team sport.  That make you work on a different level.  Toughness, mechanics, leverage.  All of those things come out of wrestling and have helped me out," he added.  "It has also been a great way for me to drop from 300 down to the 285 pound range which is nice too."

Johnson is as big as he wants to be and plans to hit the field next season at 285 and be more explosive.

"My strength is a real asset.  I never have a problem out muscling someone.  But I already know I can get a lot quicker on my feet and really improve my core strength.  That is exciting for me because that is only going to make me a better linemen."

He also competes in Discus and Shot during Track season.

Off the field he loves to hunt and fish and we shared a great story about a Bear hunt he participated in up at Tiger Mountain outside of Issaquah.  Let's just say he laughed as we threatened to name him "The Bear Hunter".    And yes…he and his brother took down the beast nice and legal.

Kentlake is 5-2 now and is back on Track.  Mason said that has been a matter of refocusing the guys after the loss of so many great players from the 2011 Team.

"The losses to Kent-Meridian and Auburn were both really close games.  And they humbled us.  That made us come together as a team and we are much stronger now.  So these next two weeks against Tahoma and Kentwood we are just trying to make a run and get into the playoffs," he added.  "We all feel we can do that."

Colleges are coming around to see him and asking for film.  His dream is to play in the Pac 12 and he says he has not preference.  But his Dad told me "Oregon" has a special place in his heart.  Time will only tell.

So write down his name coaches.  Watch this film and enjoy.  Because this Young man is moving into the top tier of the War Rooms at Major Colleges and ours two.
