Michael Tate was a verbal commit to EWU but San Jose grabbed him away over the weekend.
The kid was hot! Too hot almost. Things were wild and woolly this weekend as the top receiver in the Region next to Sammie Long headed to to San Jose to see what might be there for him. What he found was a new home.
“Yes I did,” were the words of confirmation we waited to hear from Federal Way High School’s Michael Tate when we asked him just now if he committed to the Spartans.
They made their move in recent days stepping up to ask Tate to come and visit last minute but they did not offer him over the phone. He knew they liked him but with EWU and PSU still trying to land the speedy pass catcher it was clear anything could happen.
Sounds like it was a great trip and Tate went through the events and all of that fun stuff. The offer came on Sunday afternoon which you know made Saturday Night a time of real anticipation for the Eagle.
But it all worked out when Sunday rolled around and they offered on the last day schools can have contact. So there was little chance anyone was going to be able to bend him back from the decision he made.
What is one sentence Tate has for this move up to the WAC from the Big Sky and the decision he made?
“It feels great! I am excited to be a part of their program!”
In a cool twist we know his Mom Shawnte was an alumni for a while. She was actually a student in 1994 at San Jose State and was pregnant with Michael at that time. She moved on to finish her college at a different school but in many ways Michael is coming back to his roots and when he graduates will complete the Spartan degree his Mom pursued.
Pretty amazing stuff!
Maybe it was chance and maybe that was fate but one thing is for sure. San Jose State is getting one of the most explosive kids in the Pacific Northwest in Michael Tate!
