Nike SPARQ National Championships Past The Point of Ridiculous Talent

The Opening at Nike is in the news and it is heading into the Third and final day of action.  Day 1 was packed with action as the Nations best prep football recruits went into action.  The 7 on 7 Teams were selected, the Linemen prepared for the big mans challenge, and the SPARQ National Championships were held to put the top 10 athletes in the Nation to the test.  SPARQ 2013

After a preliminary round where every athlete (about 150) at the event combine tested the best of the best battled it out on National TV to see who could set the Highest SPARQ Rating ever.  The scores are tallied from a point system as the athletes compete in the Vertical Leap, the 20 Yard Pro-Agility Shuttle, the Power Ball distance toss, and the 40 yard laser timed dash.  The higher the score the better.

Winning the event was Devante "Speedy" Noil from Edna Carr High in New Orleans, Louisiana.  He has offers from  Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Texas A&M, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, TCU and Texas.  And there are more coming in.

Speedy was withing 1 point of breaking the all time SPARQ record set bhy linebacker Mike Mitchell last year.  He was not  #1 in any single drill but he was in the top 2 or 3 in all of them.

The fastest man in the Nation went to Trey Marshall of Columbia High School in Lake City, Florida with his blazing 4.34 laser 40.  The fastest shuttle was Braxton Berrios of Leesville Road HS in Raleigh, North Carolina.  He had a 3.81 second shuttle.  Terry McLaurin of Cathedral High in Indianapolis, Indiana had a 44.4 inch vertical to win that event.  He finished second overall.

All of these top 10 finishers are projected to be stars wherever they go.  Their athleticism is beyond average and all of them potentially fall into the "Game Breaker" or "Franchise" player role.  That is how good these top athletes are.

Portland, Oregon's very own Joey Alfieri of Jesuit High School in Beaverton, Oregon made the home town proud with a 133.32 Rating which is one of the best scores ever posted.  The 6'3"- 240 lb linebacker was amazing taking 8th overall in an event that tends to favor smaller players.  Joey has offers from most of the Pac 12 and is competing all day tomorrow.

Other Northwest standouts at the event were Bellevue High Schools (Bellevue, WA) Budda Baker,  Bellevue High Schools Defensive Line standout Marcus Griffin (a WSU Commit), and Cour d'Alene High Schools Chase Blakly (A UW Commit).
