Riddle Me This: How Good Can Sam Be?

Riddle me this:

What do you fill with empty hands?

Answer:  Footballs.

At least if you play on the Century Jaguars team this season.

While that is not the real answer we found it fitting for the team with a QB Named Sam Riddle (6'2"-200 Pounds Senior).  He is literally spreading the football all over the place this year.  And that was something he planned on doing last season before a broken finger knocked him out of contention in Game 3.  A tough break for a kid with mad skills trying to rise the ranks and get a look.

Through just two games Sam has done what seems to be unreal.

  • Sam has led his team to 112 Points in 2 Games Leading 5A and 6A Divisions.
  • He has thrown for 806 Yards in 2 Games or 403 Yards per game.
  • Completed 43 of 64 passes for a % of 67.75
  • 10 TD's In the Air
  • 1 TD Rushing
  • 150 yards Rushing APX
  • No Interceptions
  • 2-0 Record including 62-35 win over annual power Lincoln (Portland) and 5 A State Champs Mountain View 50-45.

Sam has been hooking up with a host of wide receivers and points to Xavier Mitchell (4 TD's) , Vance Hamilton (4 TD's) and Brad Bennett.

"Brad took over at QB for us last season when I went out and did an amazing job.  I came back late in the Season and he and I split time at QB and we made the playoffs," said Riddle.  "This season we are using him as a weapon at WR and slot and he is so fast that if he makes the corner he is gone.  He is a beast of an athlete and crucial to our teams success."

He continued, "Looking at Xavier we have an experienced deep threat who can do it all, and Vance is a guy that is going to take those tough passing lanes over the middle and the short stuff.  If they crowd of bump any of these guys they are all going to beat people deep.  These three and the rest of our guys including Juan Hernandez at Tailback make a great offensive group.  The line has amazed all year with great blocking.  We are very fortunate to have them led by big Alex Sirois."

Sam is taking it all in stride.  He likes the way the team is playing and feels this year with another inch and 20 plus pounds on his frame he is finally where he wants to be size wise.  Things are coming easier for the Senior.

"Overall it is my Football IQ that has improved.  I am seeing plays develop as they happen and the game has slowed down.  I am making my reads and going through the progressions and it feels good.  Like we are in control."

That is no joke.  They are in indeed and with some tough games ahead Coach Bill Smith talked with the Oregonian's Jim Beseda about this fast start.

“When we go five wide, Sam is so smart,” Smith said. “And because he's so smart, we give him a lot of freedom to audible at the line of scrimmage. That's why we're scoring points is because we don't just call a play and see what happens based on what they did the previous play. Sam goes out there and looks for the mismatches.”   Catch Jim's Story Here

That Football IQ Sam says he developed this Summer in a brutal schedule of College Camps.  No Combines or Showcases for this guy.  No sir.  He went right into the belly of the beast.

"I hit up WSU, Linfield, WOU, PSU, UPS and EWU Camps.  I learned something at each event and found that I improved all along the way.  That has led to this improvement on the field," he added.

The 3.5 Student Athlete won the Camp MVP at Linfield and the Offensive MVP and QB MVP at the Western Oregon 3 Day Camp.  Both are schools showing interest in him and that he would be happy to play for.  He is also hearing from Washington State, Oregon State (Coach Jay Locey), and Eastern Washington.

Riddle said, "I want to go where I am challenged and can have a chance to lead and reach my full potential.  There is no doubt a scholarship and getting help paying for college is the main thing I will need to consider as my family is not wealthy.  Right now I am making my case on the field.  That and my film will hopefully help get me out there somewhere next season.  Right now it is all about Century Jaguar Football."

Sam is thinking about studying business while off the field he works at youth football and basketball camps, has joined DECA, and is a councilor at a 4H Summer Camp.

Sam Riddle is hot and we have to wonder if he isn't the #1 QB in the State.   Sure is looking that way.  If he has played this way his Junior season he could have been the #1 QB Prospect in the State.  With only 1 QB in Oregon with an Offer so far (Kamerun Smith; Marist, SOU) Sam is as good of a prospect as we have seen out there.

He is currently the #1 QB in Oregon or Washington in terms of Yardage and TD's and has a QB Rating of 150 (NFL) .  That is also #1 in the Region.  This includes a comparison to all 5 Division 1 QB's in the State of Washington who have already committed to play for schools. (Max Browne-Skyline USC, Sefo Liufau-Bellarmine Prep-Colorado, Kolney Cassel-Eisenhower – SMU, Bill Green-Kings HS- BYU, and Isaac Dotson-Newport-Nevada).

It is early yes.  But any thing near this type of work means he has a shot.  And that is what he has been working for.
