He is one of the most heralded heroes of both the 5A and 6A ranks here in Oregon in recent years. Anyone getting to know Steven Long can not help but be impressed with him and most are converted to fans. For that reason his decision tonight will no doubt have a lasting effect on the Portland State Viking program.
In a phone interview Long let OregonPreps.com know first that he had made a firm commitment to play for the Vikings after high school. Something that he says it was time to do.
“I was ready. I talked on the phone to the coaches for about an hour and we hung up so I could discuss it with my family,” said Long. “We all just love the fact that they believe in me and we believe in them. Together the family and I think playing for Coach Burton and with the Vikings in the perfect fit.”
Long will no doubt be used early in his career as the Vikings starting running backs spot is going to open up with the graduation of Cory McCaffrey; the Vikings star RB. That means Steven has a shot to play and contribute early.
“That will be nice and while I know I may not play right out of the gate I of course want a chance to get on the field as soon as I am able,” he added.
The Vikings Pistol offense should give Long plenty of room to work his magic as they set a back deep in the backfield and there is significant misdirection. And the powerhouse Laker has proven this year that he can switch direction on a dime and re-establish his course. That bodes well for the Vikings as well as Long.
