There are just so many great stories and great athletes every year that it is almost inconceivable to try and
fathom them all. As a writer that covers the entire Pacific Northwest we have seen the rise of the football talent here and the interest in it from those outside of the region grow to new heights.
One guy we met last season really left us with a great impression. Hard working and superbly talented define this young man from Mountlake Terrace High School. His name is Mason Stone.
We first heard of Mason in his Sophomore year as he went out on the road at the NUC combine and gained attention as a top competitor. Lots of athletes do that but Stone just kept grinding away.
He was first Team All League as a Defensive Back in each of the last two seasons and led the League with almost 100 tackles. A nice season to be sure that also included 4 picks and some highlight plays too.
While Mason is a guy you could use at Flanker and Slot he is best suited for the Defensive Safety or Corner position. At 6'0" and now almost 170 pounds he is a real solid prospect.
Add to that his 37" vertical and his 10 broad-jump and you have the makings of a big time play maker which he has become. Looking ahead he says he is ready to lead the team.
"We lost a lot of guys but we also have a lot coming back. Overall I am feeling good about things. Our young guys will be the key. If they step up we can be really good I feel, " said Mason.
He himself is ready. The years of preparation are coming to a head.
"I am much bigger and faster then I was before. In fact I just broke the schools 40 yard dash time. This is the year I feel all this work and prepartion will pay off," he added.
Now as we spoke a wrinkle emerged that we were unaware of. Another guy we just covered is his cousin and close friend. That would be Desmond Young of Edmonds-Woodway. And he says they are super close and hang out together a lot.
But a phone call came in recently that was worth discussion.
"Well desmond called to let me know our teams were going to be playing each other this year. Which is sort of unusual as we are 4A and they are 3A. No matter as we will be ready to battle; hey it could be the Clash of the Titans," he joked.
Young is known for being a speed merchant himself and as we spoke the two laughed that each of them could beat the other in a foot race. That was fun indeed. And it shold make for an interesting night as the two cousins battle and will no doubt be occupying the same part of the field looking to best each other.
"Desmond is really talented and a great guy," said Mason. "So no matter what happens it will be fun."
Mason Stone has put a lot of work in and is hearing from WSU, UW, Oregon, EWU, and a host of other schools. While and offer has not happened for him yet he does have the skill set that colleges are looking for and projects well as a top defensive secondary athlete.
Mason's Film is listed above and we will continue to bring you his emerging story.
