Not many people want to be the guy that has to go 1 on 1 in open space and defend the pass. One wrong move and you get a yellow flag and if the laundry was not bad enough you have to try and stop every play. Games are won or lost out on the edge and in those deep passing lanes. To be a top Defensive Corner or Safety is a tough job and it requires an even tougher athlete. The body movements required to pedal backward as fast as the other guy can run forward is almost impossible. Add in the fact these guys have to turn their hips and get up-field, see a ball with the back of their helmet, and touch the ball and not the receiver to break up a pass makes the whole thing seem impossible.
Many of the best Corners and Safeties play offense in High School and shift to defense as they move into college. Part of that is the whole “offense” over “defense” preference. I frankly don’t know how they even do it. These guys have my total respect – having good defensive backs makes a team a winner at any level. Without them your stuck. Here are some guys we love and think all College coaches will too- there are more coming to this list. Send us yours to dirkknudsen@gmail.com.
