Cameron Saffle Talks Cal & Future Ahead

This season we have documented hundreds of athletes in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Hawaii.  The Region we feel is the Pacific Northwest for football recruiting purposes .  Many stories are of kids rising up out of the masses to make a case that they should go all the way up to the D1 level.  Cameron Saffle of Skyline High school in Washington is one of those kids.

He had a great Sophomore year until he was injured.  Like a lot of kids that are big and physical he showed flashes of a future projection that had him going to the top.  The injury sidelined him so he had to get healthy and moved on to a big Junior season making the move from linebacker to defensive and offensive line and tight end gradually.

This season he had great camp showings and picked up some early offers from Division 1 AA and eventually Division 1 schools as well.  This past week all of his hard work and perverseness paid off in the form of a full ride offer form the Cal Bears which came right after his offer from EWU.  We caught up to Cameron to get his take on the road that got him where he wanted to go and what made a big difference in his process.

Dirk NWPR – Cameron what a great week you had! Can you tell me about the last two offers you have received- especially Cal? How did it happen and being your first Pac 12 how are you feeling about that now?

Cameron Saffle:  First off, I am very blessed to have received offers from both Eastern Washington and Cal this week. ! I’m excited that I have another opportunity to go play college football but also to have received a free education from both these schools.  I Never expected that these opportunities would be presented and I am just grateful I am experiencing them.  Coach Sawyer (EWU)  had a great talk with me as well said he loved my film along with the whole coaching staff.  He told me I could possibly play tight end and defensive end for them which was very cool to hear!  He just wanted to shake my hand as well.  He and I have been talking for a while and then he offered me a full ride to go play football for them! Had a great talk with him overall about football. I told Eastern as well that I would love to come visit the campus soon and come watch a game and I plan on doing that soon as.

Coach Tate FROM Cal came by and I knew he was coming. I had actually introduced myself to him on the phone about two weeks ago and I had been getting a lot of mail from them but never had the chance to talk to anyone on the staff so I gave him a call one morning around 7.  I introduced myself and gave him background on who I was.  He watched my film and loved it and then showed it to the head coach and d-coordinator and then told me he was flying up to see me on Friday.

All he wanted to do was shake my hand and size me up a little bit to actually see if I was 6’3 and then some and 220 pounds.

He told me I passed his eye test and said my film was great and everyone else loved my film and he said they would like to offer me. Then we talked about taking an official visit in January.   He talked about how he will fly up December 1st for an in home visit and then in January having the head coach and maybe some other coach’s fly up for another in home visit.  He also said he would have no problem playing me as a freshman if I’m healthy which was awesome to hear. I didn’t have many questions I was just VERY grateful that he flew up to talk to me, along with EWU it was so awesome for them to drive up to see me as well. Both Coach Tate and Coach Sawyer are awesome coaches; I love them both.

Getting these two offers have been really exciting and I’m very grateful.

Dirk NWPR:  Any favorites so far? Do you have a timeline for your decision?

Cameron Saffle:  I couldn’t stress how awesome it is just to be considered by any school to play college football for regardless of what school.  All these schools I’ve been offered by are all equal in my book. I’m just doing all my research on all these schools and considering a bunch of different factors.

I don’t know yet! I’m still sending my film out to different schools. I will be taking an official visit to Utah State soon! Still talking to other schools as well.

Dirk NWPR:   Looking back to a year ago when we first talked and your were trying to gain interest and an offer what were the things that helped the most to get you to this point?

Cameron Saffle:   I mean my Coach has said it many times- that my film is my resume. My Head Coach Mat Taylor has also done so much for me and everyone on our football team. He talks about us so highly to coaches and goes the extra mile to make sure we are noticed.

Dirk NWPR:  Cameron that is terrific!  Best of luck as you move ahead!

Cameron Saffle:   Thank you again for all you have done too.

Dirk NWPR:  You Bet!
