Cole Madison Gains Offers and Finds A Home At WSU

With all this recruiting wave it is hard to see all the great talent trying to rise.  Like a crowded beach at Waimea on Oahu when the right one comes a few rise up and grab it and a whole lot more get caught in the wash and have to wait for the next one.  That is a very appropriate analogy for this process.  If each recruit is a surfer then each wave has to be an opportunity to shine.  And for Cole Madison he caught  a couple of nice ones and rode them all the way into the beach.

At the Northwest Elite Football Camp at Mercer Island High School the Kennedy High big man rose up and showed coaches he had soft hands and good footwork at the Tight End spot.  At 6'5"-265 pounds he is a bruiser and while he certainly can play linemen either side of the ball he is still hoping for a shot at the TE position.  While at the camp he showed out in front of 18 colleges in attendance.

He followed that camp and caught another big wave out at the WSU camp.  And this one crashed on the beach and brought him all the way home.

"It was a great experience.   The Coaches put me at O'line, D'line, and then moved me to Tight End.  Really I felt great about all of those positions but probably the D'line and Tight End efforts were the best," said Madison.

Well he was not the only one that thought he did well.  So did Mike Leach and his Cougar staff.  They offered Cole a scholarship at the end of Camp.

"Amazing.  That is all I can say.  It was a great outcome for me.  Right now the Coaches are saying I have a chance to come into WSU and contribute to any of those positions.  They want to see if I grow more by the time I get to that point," he added.

After WSU he hit Boise State and Idaho in the days that followed.  He ended this week with offers from WSU, Idaho, and Northern Colorado.  All great programs.

Once home he pondered his options and did the one thing that many recruits wait too long to do.  He pulled the trigger.

"It was such a great fit at WSU that the more I thought about it the more I wanted to be a part of it.  I called the Coaches and verbally committed," said Cole who admits he is a big Husky Fan.  "Now I am going to be a Fan of both schools!"

Why commit now?  Was in a hurry?

"No but it felt right.  I spent a lot of time speaking to Coach Leach and the rest of the staff.  They are the kind of guys I want to be coached by.  They tell it to you straight forward.  I loved the school, the facility, the town, and they are turning things around fast.  It will be a new challenge and that is what I want to be a part of."

Madison hopes to play Tight End and says the Coaches were very big on his hands and his feet.  But for him he knows he could be 280 pounds plus in a year or so.

"Anywhere on the field is great.  But man it would be fun to play TE in a Mike Leach offense," he said talking with us about how impressed he was with the Cougs.

He is a Pac 12 commit and it all started less then two weeks ago when he caught a wave at Mercer Island High School and road it for all it was worth!
