Daniel Greene and Isaia Mullen To Lead Madison Into Johnson Era

Daniel Greene and Isaia Mullen To Lead Madison Into Johnson Era

A movement is on over at Madison and it seems to be a very positive one.  New Head Coach Don Johnson is best known for his turnaround job at Milwaukie and his improvements over at Evergreen in Vancouver, Washington.  He is big, loud, brash, and makes no apologies for any of that.  He can come across a little rough or edgy to some.  But behind those perceptions some seem to have  is a man I know to have the capacity for love and real caring.  As a black coach he wants to be in the black communities where he can help.  That means the PIL in Oregon and he dove in with two feet taking on the Madison job.  The Senators have had some very rough years and have only won a handful of games lately.

Daniel Greene is a dynamic big time talent who has transferred to Madison.

Coach Johnson hit the ground running this Spring after taking on the challenge and went into the halls of the school looking for players.  Nowadays the kids talk.  Coach Don is a great football mind by most accounts, the son of San Diego Charger Coach Don Johnson who is perhaps the best defensive coach in the league. He has been well trained and knows football.  It is in his blood.

At Milwaukie he had several kids come to the program and succeed in school and on the field after they had failed elsewhere.  Led by Kendrick Bourne, who is now on All American watch lists at EWU, the Milwaukie Mustangs made a 2nd round playoff run the year he coached there.

At Evergreen he developed the program while struggling to win the Greater Saint Helens League title; a place known as the best overall league in the State of Washington.  While there he developed collegiate talent like Koby Eaton, Rey Green, and Justice Murphy.  All of these guys are impact players now with Murphy expected to start as a true freshmen at Wyoming.

Now to Madison.  The word is out.  Johnson and the Senators need players and in the inner city of Portland, Oregon many parents and players are looking at their best options.  That might just have them focused on a guy like Johnson.  Transfers will happen for sure and in a League like the PIL with a 50-60% overall graduation rate the kids should be free to go wherever they can succeed.  If that is Roosevelt or Lincoln or Grant or Wilson or Madison so be it.  They should freely move to better themselves.  This we covered from our perspective in Race and Recruiting a few weeks back.

For me Johnson is a guy who can reach the boys on a personal level and get them to buy in and understand it has to be about the grades and the team in order to better themselves.

“Dirk – I Read the article again! Wow that was powerful man. That needs to go national,” said Johnson after reading our story on the travesty that the PIL has become academically.  Home to so many legendary athletes it is up to all of us to better the district and help the kids.

Our story covered former Madison and Grant star LJ Sly-Cain and his battle to return to football and school.  Johnson talked about his position on Madison and the league.

“We will make this a power and help inner city kids succeed; that’s why I came back to the inner city. Becaue of the things like your article points out. If you ask LJ SLY CAIN if he could do it over again he’d say he’d play for Johnson… he was just working out at Madison (before heading off to Siskyou’s JC).”

Two players have already emerged to lead the Senators.  One was in the building and one has transferred from Grant.

Isiah Mullen and Daniel Greene will both be Pac 12 guys from Madison,” said Johnson so we asked him to expand.

“Isaia Mullen is 6’4 185 lbs, a Wide Receiver, he runs great routes and gets the ball at its highest point. He’s worked out with Kendrick Bourne (EWU) and Justice Murphy (Wyoming) all summer and is a step above both of them entering his Jr season.  Daniel Greene (JR) is a LB that has Sunday potential.  He is 6’3″- 228 lbs right now.  He reminds me of Chris Claiborne who I grew up with who won the only Butkus award in USC history and was 1st round #9 pick.”

Also rising up for Madison is Wryor Noil who has moved from Louisiana to Portland and Johnson says “he’s lights out one of the best CB/Slot in the state”and he’s a 4.0 student and has Division 1 talent.

The guys had a great Camp season and their film is here- Mullen #7 Greene#22 Noil #6.

We saw Mullen dominate the best corners in the NW at the Rose City rumble 7 on 7 this summer – he is too big, too fast, and too nasty for most kids his age.  Greene is a force of nature and only a Junior too- and we know for a fact Pac 12 schools are on him.  Noil may well be the real deal-  his cousin is Speedy Noil who is a freshmen All American WR at Texas a & M.  We saw him run a 4.34 laser at the Nike event two years ago.

Johnson should have kids coming his way at Madison for all the reasons stated above.  His offense is fun to watch and while them winning the league is a long shot they will compete it appears and the kids he aims to serve will be out to hear his message and try and better themselves.  That is a very good thing indeed!

Best wishes to Don Johnson and the Madison Senators as they rebuild the program this season!
