There is a story I heard once about a farmer in the 1950’s who was walking across his farm in Eastern Washington after plowing his field and he stumbled over a rock. In his frustration of picking himself up he turned to look at the oddly placed stone that had tripped him up. He had just finished removing all the loose stones from his field so before he turned to walk away he decided to look closer.
As he approached it he realized that the football sized rock was out of place and seemed to have some special size and shape about it.
He thumped it with his boot and it did not move. He thumped it again but this time he nearly broke his toe. He then knew he had something special that was going to make his day a very unique one.
For our intrepid farmer had run across a Meteorite that would eventually be named “Withrow” after the town it was found near in Eastern Washington. And that stone is worth hundreds of thousands today.
In a modern day version of that story we think we have found something of similar uniqueness and characteristics. For anyone who does not follow prep athletics you might feel a little like W.C. Nollmeyer, our farmer, after you see this piece of film.
Now our modern day meteorite is a young man from AC Davis High School in Yakima, Washington named Deion Wright.
The 6’2″, 190 pound athlete is literally awaiting his discovery by some lucky college and in our estimation is very close to getting his first scholarship offer.
This season he led a tough nosed group of kids at AC Davis to a great record and in doing so had the following stats:
2,988 yards passing
34 TD’s Passin
QB Efficiency Rating of 180.2
357 Yards Rushing
3 TD’s
3,325 Total Yards with 37 TD’s
And he did this with a hard working group of kids but not a really big line.
A review of just some of his highlights show an athlete who makes plays when there appears to be nothing happening and a kid that could have run anytime he wanted to. He was of course discouraged from doing that because of his importance to the squad.
Those numbers don’t lie but the thing is they do not tell the whole story. This young man is just like that Meteorite and one lucky coach or collegiate program is going to trip over him and have something very valuable for all time. Something out there is Eastern Washington rare enough that on closer inspection is extremely valuable.
Deion Wright is one of the best kids out there this year. Come have a closer look!
