Deion Wright Leads Talented AC Davis to League Record

WashingtonPreps stays on our Mission to shine the light on the East Side of the Cascades in our quest to find the best athletes in the Region. A small but noticeable shockwave hit our Prep Talent Meter this weekend which prompted our Editor Dirk Knudsen to hit the trail in search of the epi-center.

The shockwave came out of Wenatchee, Washington and was centered at Eastmont High School. The cause of the commotion seemed to be the performance of the AC Davis (Yakima) football team. They beat Eastmont 54-28 in a non league game and they did it under the arm and play making of Senior QB Deion Wright.

Wright set the League record of 356 yards last year against the same Eastmont Wildcats. Apparently he decided to better that.

He completed 25 of 37 passes with no interceptions for the Pirates. By games end he had 462-yards and had set off our PTM. We found the cause of the shockwave.

Finding Wright took some time as he is one of the few guys who is not on Facebook but persistence paid off.

The 6’1″, 185 pound scrambler was gracious and humble in our interview.

“This was a team effort. The guys have worked so hard, all of them, and we have planned for success and are driven to make it to State for the first time,” he said.

In the win Wright hit Cooper Kupp, Christopher Chapman, and David Trimble Jr. for 97 yards 1 TD, 201 yards 1 TD, and 109 yards and 2 TD’s respectively.

Wright reflected on his best friends and trio of talented targets, “These guys are amazing. All of them are so gifted and they all have great hands. Each one gives defenses a different problem and me so many options.”

Chapman is his main target and Wright says he is a “get and go” guy that is shifty and way under the radar. Chapman had 10 catches averaging over 20 yards per catch.

Then there is Kupp who is a do it all frak of an athlete. Cooper had 2 rushes for 93 yards and scored on both. He added 3 catches for 97 yards and a TD. Then not finished he lined up at QB and threw a deep ball for a score. 7 Touches and he was in on 4 TD’s.

“That is the man right there. He is elusive, shifty, and the hardest player I have ever covered myself,” says Wright who plays corner/safety at times.

That leaves Trimble Jr. who is a highly touted hooper but also on WashingtonPreps.com list of Top Athletes for Football.

“Now we are talking pure speed. If he gets separation he is gone,” says Deion. “His vertical leaping ability allows him to elevate where no one else can go so I trust him to go up and get those deep balls.”

The three targets give Wright so many choices but don’t think it is easy. The line at Davis is undersized and still coming together as a unit.

“If our guys up front keep working they can be good. They may be the key to our success this season and are working hard.”

Wright himself while humble is a terrific talent who is known for his ability to scramble and make plays. He makes good decisions and is getting better mechanically. Something he says is paying off.

“Last season I was more of a play maker with some mechanical issues. But I dedicated myself and as a group we got together and threw a lot. I took hours and hours to get my mechanics down and it feels great,” he concluded.

So far the college interest has been mostly Big Sky and the 1,900 yards and 17 TD’s he posted last season has not gone un-noticed.

Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, CWU, EWU, WSU, and others are watching. What they might well find is a below the radar kid who at seasons end may have stats to rival any QB on the West Coast. Time will tell.

Based upon the record setting performance that caught our attention Wright and his boys are all going to get a serious look.

The Honors student wants a chance. Anywhere is fine.

Talking openly with us Wright stated, “The level is irrelevant. I want to con tribute and play early in college and that is all. The love I have for the game is what drives me and of course getting help for school would be big for me.”

If there is a college in need of a QB and ready made Skill package these four would offer a great choice.

Friends since youth Wright sees this early success as a culmination of a team of kids who have grown up together and worked hard to achieve their goals.

Best of luck to the AC Davis Pirates will keep an eye on the Prep Talent Meter and particularly the sensor we have planted out near Yakima.
