The boys of 2014 headed down to San Antonio last week for the US Army All American National Combine. A chance to compete and to shine on the biggest stage in the Nation. And they all did very well. We tracked them heading down and we are updating all their news as they return.
The first guy hitting us up from the San Antonio Airport was top rated Wide Receiver E’lon Mack of Heritage High School. The lanky and gifted speed burner went in and competed hard at that Wide receiver position. And he felt like he did pretty well.
“This was my first big football event like this. And right off the bat I was just soaking it all in. The size of the kids, the speed of the best of best at every position. It was a lot to take in really,” said Mack who posted just under 1,000 yards last season receiving.
The thing about E’lon to know is that he was #1 in the three State region with average yards per catch of 29. That means ever time he caught a ball he covered 1/3rd of the field. The kid has terrific hands but moreover is going to put yards on the defense after the catch.
He is a sub 11.0 laser 100 Meter times and ran a 4.6 Laser at the Army Combine. That in fact was one of the faster times. Now remember folks a 4.6 laser is like running a 4.35 hand time. So that is blazing speed for any high school kid especially a 6’1″-19=85 pound wide receiver.
How was the overall experience?
“It was amazing. I mean the people we met and the journey itself was the thing. Perspective. That is what I got the most was the ability to out there on my own, travelling, seeing what that life is going to be like someday I hope. It was a learning experience for sure.”
He says his vertical was up a little at 32″ and that his shuttle dropped a bit to 4.20. Both solid numbers. But he knows what he needs to do to get better.
“I am going to just improving. To be good from Washington is nice. When I saw some of the talent there I immediately knew I have to do more and get better. So it is back to work as soon as I settle in. I saw the best in the Nation at every position and I can compete with them. Now I will challenge myself to rise to the very top,” he concluded.
His mail box is just now getting some attention and he is starting to plot out his Summer plans. He knows he has to make camps and showcase himself at as many colleges as he can.
” I was watching Derrick Henry sign autographs and Thomas Tyner and Max Browne and you know that is where I want to be a year from now. The entire thing just gets you an idea of what can happen.”
His ability to stop and start on a dime is uncanny and that is something that is under rated. Watch his film form 2012 and you will be seeing broken ankles all over the field.
E’lon appears right at the top of our 2014 Prospect Watch Lists for WR in the State of Washington and we have him moving on to the D-1AA level at a minimum. Great hands, great size, great speed. It all adds up!
