We covered gunslinger Simon Burkett when no one knew his name. The Meridian High School (WA) has been well trained by the likes of Taylor Barton and others and his Junior Year was awesome. His name came to me from some mutual football friends late in 2016 and when I spoke to former Central Catholic Ram (ASU) Connor Humphreys and his Mother Rita. They asked me to look in on Simon who in their view has what it takes to go D1, a referral which I trusted because they have lived it.
Burkett showed up at the NW Stars Camp in Februrary which has become one of the best stops on the off season camp tour. He stood out before I knew who he was, landing pass after pass on the fingertips of every receiver he threw too. His poise, mechanics, and ability to read defenses were all factors I noted. Twenty minutes later I was a fan.
The kid had obvious talents and in our view was a Big Sky shoe-in. He had a productive Summer and left quite a big impression on the EWU Eagles who offered him recently. Meridian HS has put out come high-octane QB’s and with 51 TD’s already to his resume the 6’2.5″- 175 lb. athlete could rank among the best ever.
He didn’t linger very long on the offer and pledged his commitment to the Eagles locking in his future at what many believe to be the best football school in America. In Burkett the Eagles have a classic dual-threat QB and make no mistake, he can run the football.
At this point he is a top 5 QB in the Pacific NW along with big time talent Casey Bauman of Nooksack Valley (WA). Bauman is committed to Montana State and these two spectacular small town talents will battle each other twice in the coming season as they play in the same league! The NW 9 QB Challenge is being filmed live right now in Kirkland, WA with the best of the NW QB’s vying for the right to be called #1. Simon was in 1st place through the first two days and you can follow that story at @NW9 on Twitter.
