Online Classes Sideline NW High School Football Star

Online Classes Sideline NW High School Football Star

Another page in the recruiting book.  Not even any need for a chapter.  Online courses are a real crap shoot.  They are often used to make up credits and or to take missing classes needed to get a High School student graduated and on their way.  They are widely used for electives and things like PE or Health and they seem to work.  But who is approved to have such courses available is a district by district process and something that comes with some real risk for student athletes trying to move on to college.

No one knows it all but we try and keep it all straight.

Marcus Johnson of Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington thought he was all set to attend Central Washington University and play football there.  That was until the NCAA weighed in on some online classes he took while at Lincoln.  Turns out the classes are a no go as far as the NCAA is concerned.  So Johnson, who appears ready to rock on the football field, is on the sidelines as a player and a student for now.

The NCAA rules and laws seem to punish kids and it often hits the small school athlete just trying to make it on in life.  I don’t like this one bit at all.  His Mom was told the classes applied and would be acceptable.  They are not according to the NCAA.

Lesson learned.  Don’t plan on online courses working all the time- heck maybe not even most of the time.  Johnson can work this all out but it will take time and perseverance.  We wish him well.

Here is more from Tacoma-

“TACOMA, Wash. — A former Lincoln High School football star has been benched from playing college football — not because of his lack of talent, but because of online classes he took while in high school earlier this year.

Now his mother is blaming officials at Tacoma School District headquarters for putting her son’s dreams on hold.

Marcus Johnson was recruited by several colleges for his quick moves on the football field, but his mother knew his GPA needed some boasting in order to qualify for a scholarship opportunity.

One option was to take classes online that counted as core credits for graduation. Johnson signed up assuming the online classes would be accepted by the NCAA, the governing body of collegiate athletics.”   Full Story is Right Here
