Selah’s Jake Weber One To Watch

Selah’s Jake Weber One To Watch

Story By Coach Demian Walter; Eastside Analyst for NWPR

If a college football coaching staff is looking for a player who possesses breakaway speed with the ball in his hands, I think we might have found a kid that might be just what the right staff is looking for as we head down the stretch in this latter stage of the recruiting cycle.
Jake Weber is a 5’ 9” 150 lbs. Class of 2019 RB/DB from Selah High School in Selah, WA. Jake was named a First Team All-League selection as a running back and as a cornerback from the Central Washington Athletic Conference in his junior and senior seasons. He was also named the Offensive MVP for the CWAC conference his senior season as he totaled 1,213 rushing yards on 131 carries (that is an
astounding 9.3 yards per carry average) with 21 TD’s on the season. Jake also excels on the track team at Selah HS running the sprints. Jake is also a very good student as well. He has a 3.5 GPA and an SAT score of 1060 (two-part score).

When I reviewed Jakes senior season highlight film, there are some things that jump off the screen to me, there is speed galore on film and Weber has good vision and elusiveness with the ball in his hands. Weber’s speed is on full display on the second clip at the 3:22 mark of his highlight film (I have attached the link to his highlight film at the bottom of the article), on this play he shows a great burst on a 73 yard
TD run where he is untouched, it is true track speed on display from a running back. At the: 53 and the 1:20 mark of his film Weber shows that he can be a slot receiver and do some damage out of the backfield. At the: 40, 1:29 and 1:40 mark Weber demonstrates his cutting ability and vision and his unwillingness to go down easy. Bottom line Weber is an electric player who can flat out run.

As I said earlier in the article that Jake is a standout sprinter on the Selah HS Track and Field Team, Jake offered this commentary about his sprinting experiences, “I played varsity soccer my freshman year and earned my first letter. After much thought and council from coaches, I switched to track my sophomore year, as it would help me with football more. My Junior year I got injured 4 weeks before the state meet. After going through physical therapy and rebuilding I didn’t qualify in the 100 and 200 last season. My fastest 100-meter time my sophomore year was 11.17 seconds and my fastest 200-meter time my sophomore year was 22.74 seconds.”

That was two seasons ago, so I would think that two years later and healthy as a senior Jake has a chance to improve that 100M time down into the 10-second range. That is the type of speed that translates on a football field.

When asked what he thinks his best attributes are that he brings to his team and to the game of football Jake had this to say, “My best attributes I bring would be I’m a fast learner. Also, I’m a good leader. Physically, I have good speed, agility, and good vision. I am a fighter and I don’t back down. I’m a “step on their throats” kind of person.” That is my kind of person and my kind of football player.”

Jake played a key role in helping Selah HS reach unprecedented heights during his career there. Jake said this about his experience at Selah HS, “My junior season was a great season for us. We went 10-1 after losing in the state quarterfinals. We were league champions and had the best record in Selah football history. My senior season was tough but was still a good season. We went 8-2 but unfortunately didn’t
make the playoffs. We beat a 4A team, and two 3A teams even though we were a 2A team.”

On the recruiting side of things, Jake is hearing from a few schools in the Pacific Northwest region including George Fox University, Whitworth University, and Eastern Oregon University. I believe that Weber is a player who once he finds a fit with a college program will improve annually with his strong work ethic.

During my in-home meeting with Jake, I came away very impressed with this kids’ character and personality. Jake is just a really good kid, he is a humble young man, who comes from a good family and is very talented and is a very hard worker and will make a college coaching staff very happy to have him on their roster as a slot receiver or running back and a kickoff and punt return specialist. I wish this fine
young man, all the best in his pursuit to play college football.

Great article. You are spot on describing him & his abilities. He is the type of player coaches dream of. He has the 3 H’s football talks about – Hard working, Hardened & Humble. He would be willing to learn any coaches system & would be easy to coach. It also doesn’t hurt that you can feel comfortable that off the field, you will not have to worry about this kid getting into any bad situations. He was raised right & has a good head on his shoulders. Excited to see where Jake’s future will take him.
