Friday afternoon at Skyview High School 3 storm athletes were honored as they each signed their letters of intent in front of a crowd of more than 50 friends, coaches and family members.
Rachel McQuivey signed a letter to attend BYU for track and Kevin Boyd signed a letter to attend Columbia University, also for track, prior to Fields.
“These people are so accomplished as scholars, as athletes, that there are instuations of higher learning that are fighting to get them to come there,” said Dean Jones of the Merchant Marines Academy Alumni Association, who spoke at the signing party.
Jones explained to the crowd that the Merchant Marines Academy is a federal academy on par with the Naval Acadamy in Annapolis Maryland, and the United States Military Academy in West Point New York. Unlike those Academies and the Air Force Academy, once Fields graduates from the Merchant Marines Academy he will be able to choose which branch of the Armed Forces he wants to serve in.
“We are proud of him and we are greatfull we got him,” Jones continued. “I know his accomplishments on the gridiron and in school will continue to be as notable in New York as they were here in Washington.”
