Wildcats Soar Over Lakers In Playoff Win

Wildcats Soar Over Lakers In Playoff Win

The Westview Wildcats got their first playoff win since 2010 last night at home against an always tough Lake Oswego Lakers team.  The two have tangled in the past with Lake Oswego coming out on top.  Last night belonged to the Wildcats on a stellar team performance with highlights from the Cats big time talent.

Mason Elliott Westview

We have talked about this kid before- Mason Elliott has a 6’10” wing span and can leap- add to that terrific hands and speed and you have the makings of a terrific High School player and collegiate hopeful.

The game started with Laker QB Mitch Verburg connecting with Cameron Nicklos on a big time pass and catch.  The Cats answered with 3 scores of their own as Junior QB Zac Schmerber connected 3 times to 6’3″-180 lb Junior wide receiver Mason Elliott.  Schmerber would go for 270 yards in the first half and Elliott reigned in the 3 TD’s and 170 yards in the first.

The score wound up 56-21 but was close in the 3rd when the Lakers surged back to make it 28-21 and it seemed the momentum was tipping back their way when Westview connected with Samori Toure, the #1 receiver in the NW, to make it 35-21.  In the ensuing drive for the Lakers Elliott snagged a pass out of the air form his Safety spot and broke it 40 yards to the endzone to make it 42-21.

Romeo Herrera-Murphy the cracked off a 90 yard rush and finished a Cat drive with a 2 yard burst and Reed Foster added a late TD to make it 56-21 for a final.

Schmerber finished with 325 yards and 5 TD’s to add to his gaudy season stats; not the biggest kid around but he has learned how to make plays, read the field, and really looked solid against a well coached Laker team.

Just as important was the work of the Westview defense led by Safety Jason Rucker who had 2 sacks and was in on knockdowns and big plays all night. Toure and Elliott looked stellar defensively and the Cats line was solid making it a long night for the Lakers field general Mithch Verburg who despite the loss looked ready to move on and play at the next level.

Cameron Nicklos (JR WR), Dawson Jaramillo (Soph )L/DL, Shawn Elliott (Soph OL/DL), and a host of other Lakers looked solid and will lead the team back next year.

For the Cats it was a big win and an important step.  They get the pleasure or playing the #1 team in the State next week- Metro League arch Rivals and nemesis Jesuit.  It was take a total team commitment and big nights from all the Cats to stand a shot at beating the Crusaders but that is why we play the game!  Great night for High School football at Westview last night.
